The King, a silvery-haired Doberman, had a knight that never failed.
That Catahoula had caught wolves, thieves, deer, and once even a chicken-murdering mink. Anything he pursued, he overtook.
But the Fox of Fernwood was different. Thrice the Catahoula cornered him; three times the Fox vanished with a laughing bark.
The Hounds of Three Counties gathered in witness.
Then Pip, the useless lapdog jester, stepped forward, smoking a butt that made the King’s nose itch.
“Majesty,” he said, “the Hound always catches what he chases.”
The King nodded.
“And the Fox escapes anything that chases him.”
Pip smiled.
“So stop chasing him.”
The Catahoula sat down.
The Fox stopped running.
Pip grinned.
“Gotcha!”
