‘A book is a garden carried in the pocket’ Chinese proverb

A delightful present from artist Olga Grotova - some Japanese sweets made in honour of her Kyoto exhibition.

Bangkok Airport

In transit Ko Samui to Chang Mei

Chang Mei

Took bus\taxi with old lady driver - probably younger than me. Looking for Computer Plaza to find charger for Joseph’s Sanyo Exacti C5. Tried various places - then girl in mobile phone shop sent us to Siam TV.

Crossing very busy road - mopeds, 4x4s. People in moat/culvert fishing.

Walk down to Wat. Take Tuc Tuc to ‘Government Shop’. Guy at Wat - basketball teacher - sends us there.

Having a beer in the Living Room cafe. Looking for the Thai market. WaIk to Night Market Street.

Halfway down I stop at hotel dining room. Hotel Suriwongse. Bamboo shoot soup (spicy) - listed as Northern delicacy in menu. Elvis impersonator due on Iater. Chef watches me eat soup and gives me a smile

Chang Mei feels northern. although it has a touch of London or somewhere l’ve been before. Grey buildings, brown orange river. Busy.

Get back to hotel. Check emails. In the transition from Ko Samui to Chang Mei it feels as if everything has changed. I miss the bungalow at KS, a brief tropical paradise.

Summer dried-out salt lake in Crete

Almost all absurdity of conduct arises from the imitation of those whom we cannot resemble.

Samuel Johnson

Most writers today move about in gangs. They haven’t the strength to stand and fight as individuals. But even as ‘gangsters’ their machine guns are full, not of bullets, but of dried peas.

Dylan Thomas

Parador de Jaén, Spain

Lunchtime yesterday arrived at Point Reyes Sea Shore Lodge - though not so much of the sea shore. That’s a 20 minute drive away, and as the rooms weren’t ready till 3 we headed off down a eucalyptus lined hill, to Stinson Beach, a destination recommended by an enthusiastic San Franciscan cyclist wearing a blue Citibank foreign exchange strip.

We cycle I said lamely, after he had told Jamie he and his partner were cycling 95 miles today. She was keen to get back to Palo Alto to buy a Toshiba tablet pc. She looked about 80 with that wierdly wasted musculature of the obsessed exerciser. He was tall and balding with a band of sweat round his neck and frizzy grey hair round the back of his skull that extended over his entire upper body. He was keen to plan our route to the beach for us.

Pine Cone Cafe. Lagunitas Dogtown Pale AIe. Humming birds supping from blue trumpets, then zooming up to high branches like tiny UFOs. A small stream. Feeling stressed, tired and grumpy.

Agapanthus. Butterflies. Being bombed by walnuts.

The Station House Cafe Point Reyes. Popovers - Yorkshire puddings
