Making Peace with Church Hurt | E4
Church is a full contact sport Nobody sits you down and tells you this when you join a church, but church is a full contact team sport, and sometimes your teammates are the ones who hurt you the worst. Conflict in the church is not a sign that something has gone wrong. It is assumed. The question is not whether we will be hurt, but what we will do with the hurt when it comes.
A process you practice, again and again There comes a point where peacemaking is no longer just a principle we proclaim but a process we must practice. So what is the process? In Luke 17, Jesus gives it in a single sentence. If your brother sins, rebuke him, and if he repents, forgive him, even seven times in a day.

We live in the age of the trickster. Every civilization has a name for him. The Polynesians call him Maui. The Norse, and Marvel, call him Loki. The Greeks named him Odysseus. Paul describes him in Ephesians 4:14 as human cunning. The trickster is never direct. He is always disguised. What looks like a gift can carry an army. What looks like peace can hide a war. And once you've survived enough…

People of Peacemaking | Proverbs 1 Conflict isn't just about what happened. It's about who you're dealing with. Before Solomon teaches us how to speak wisely, forgive wisely, or make peace wisely, he teaches us to recognize four different kinds of people: the simple, the young, the fool, and the wise. Each requires a different response. In this first message of our Formed by Peacemaking series,…

What Got Us Here Won’t Get Us There In the early 2000s, Disney was on the brink of collapse. Shareholders were revolting. Morale was at an all-time low. The board finally forced out longtime CEO Michael Eisner. Here’s what makes that story fascinating. Eisner’s first decade was historic. His last was abysmal. Same man. Same company. So what changed? Disney grew. Eisner never grew with it. Every…

Some passages of Scripture come with baggage. Ephesians 5:22–6:9 might carry more than any of them. Take a brief look at history and you’ll see why this may be one of the most dangerous passages in the Bible. Husbands have twisted “wives, submit” into permission to dominate and control. Verses about children have been used to silence honest questions and excuse abusive parenting. Slaveholders…

The Thinker And The Gates Of Hell There’s a statue most of us have seen at some point, even if we can’t immediately place where. Auguste Rodin’s The Thinker has become one of the most recognized images in Western culture, and for good reason. The figure is strong, capable, self-possessed. He sits alone, deep in thought, as if the answers to life’s greatest questions are just one more moment of…

There’s More Going On Than You Can See Most of us live on the surface. We wake up, manage our circumstances, navigate our relationships, and try to keep our heads above water. But what if the most important things happening in your life aren’t visible from the surface at all? That’s the provocative claim at the center of Ephesians. Written by Paul near the end of his life, this letter isn’t a…

The Overview Effect: What Ephesians Wants To Do To You On Christmas Eve, 1968, astronaut Bill Anders was orbiting the moon aboard Apollo 8 when he looked out the window and saw something he wasn’t expecting — Earth. Hanging in the blackness of space, fragile and luminous, rising over the lunar horizon. He grabbed his camera and took what would become one of the most famous photographs in history.…
