Hi Amazing Parent,
Ask me what I brag about as a parent, and it’s not what you’d expect. I don’t lead with grades or travel team rosters or which kid made honor roll. I lead with this: I have four kids, ages 11 to 17, and not one of them has ever had a cavity.
Not one. Not once. Across sixteen years of dentist visits with four different kids and four different personalities, that streak has held.
I’ll be the first to say some of that is genetics — enamel and saliva and jaw structure aren’t things I get credit for. But a lot of it isn’t luck. It’s thousands of nights of brushing teeth when everyone was exhausted and just wanted to skip it. It’s the food choices we made on repeat, year after year, long before any of them could understand why. It’s every six-month cleaning we didn’t skip, even during the years that felt like we were barely keeping our heads above water.
None of that makes a good headline. Nobody puts “consistent flossing” on a college application. But when I think about what I’m actually proud of, it’s not one big moment — it’s sixteen years of the same small thing, done over and over, long enough that it became invisible.
That’s true of so much of the hardest parts of parenting. The wins that matter most rarely look impressive in the moment. They look like Tuesday. And Wednesday. And every Tuesday after that.
So next time you’re tempted to feel like you don’t have anything to brag about, look for the boring thing you’ve kept showing up for. That’s probably it.
Here’s to the boring wins,
Dr. Lindsay 💛
