We recently announced that we were launching a Silent Book Club chapter on Salt Spring Island, and now we’re just two weeks away from our first event, which is happening on Sunday July 26.
The format is deceptively simple: you show up with a book and read for an hour in good company. That’s it! Bring whatever you're currently reading. There's no assigned title, no discussion questions, no pressure to have an opinion ready, no need to listen to the audiobook in your car at 2x speed on your way to the meeting.
I know many people struggle to carve out the time to read these days — there's always some distraction tempting you to put the book down. The laundry machine is beeping, the kids need a snack, dogs need walking, emails need responses, then you get into bed and you can’t keep your eyes open. (Yeah, I get it).
Even if you are an avid reader, it’s a solitary sport. So this is an hour where the only thing happening is reading, and you're doing it in community. I think we could all use a little more of that.
For our first meeting we will convene at the picnic tables behind the Jam Factory at 319 Upper Ganges Rd. Here’s how the afternoon will go:
2:00 — arrive, grab a snack or drink, find a seat, say hi
2:30 — an hour of quiet reading
3:30 — surface, chat if you want, or just keep reading
Bring your book, bring a friend, bring your kids if they can read (or colour or draw) independently. These events are free, but we appreciate pre-registration so we can ensure there is seating grouped together for everyone.
You can also forward this email to a friend to invite them along.
See you there! And thanks for reading,
