Robert Howard aka OLO Bunny · Paperbag stories

£80 bought me a woman today. ‘30 minutes’ she said. It had been £100, then she said ‘Larry Lazario? That’s who you are. Am I right?’ I looked at the floor and shuffled my feet, replying ‘Yes’ as I did. ‘We were in the same class at Barham. I went to Copland. You went to Alperton’, followed by the word ‘Right?’ again. This time I nodded and, somehow, found the courage to look into the eyes of the woman who remembered me from sixty odd years ago. Then I said ‘Maureen O’Shea’ and she laughed. ‘For that you can have £20 off. Here, let me help you with your coat.’

In nothing more than a push-up bra and a thong, once she had removed her housecoat, she helped me undress until I sat on the side of the bed in all my glory, amazed at myself, who had all my attention, not the woman now naked before me.

She ushered me to move over so she could join me on the bed. ‘Relax’ she said ‘I am not going to bite you. Anyways, how did you find your way here? I don’t advertise.’

‘Jake Jacobson’ I replied.

‘Ah, at this rate I will have the whole bloody class soon. I thought you would all be dead by now.’ and laughed a smoker’s laugh, though I guessed she had given up a while ago from the fact that no smell of tobacco lingered on her clothes or in the flat we were in behind the Town Hall.

‘Can I ask what brings you here?’ she asked in a quiet voice, a hand stroking my arm and gently taking hold of a hand. ‘My wife Lily told me just before she died to look for someone else, convincd as she was that I would not cope on my own, but I have managed okay and feel ready to look for someone, but before I do I want to make sure all my parts are in working order, a confidence I shared with Jake, and here I am. He didn’t say I would know you. I will murder him for that!’

‘Don’t be too hard on the man. Married men like him have nowhere else to go when their wives start saying ‘no'. You, on the other hand, have plenty of women who will take an interest once you put yourself about.’

She turned on her side and snuggled up, her hand no longer holding mine. ‘It’s a nice one. Ladies love clean cut men,’ then she climbed onto an elbow and said ‘You will have to be quick, just twenty minutes left'. I have another trick at three.

And I was. Lily still there ‘Get on with it will you.’ I had heard that phrase almost every time for 46 years and now there was Maureen O’Shea saying ‘Slow down. You can make me happy if you try.’

As we lay there, now just minutes left, I asked Maureen how she became a ‘sex worker’. She replied with a smile ‘A sex therapist please. I think our life stories will have to wait until another time. You will come back? £50 if you do.’
