The first time I saw emergent beauty, it fit into 64K of RAM. I didn’t realize it then, but I was practicing generative art. The screen couldn’t always keep up with the math, creating Moiré patterns — shimmering, unintended textures that emerged where the code met the grid. It was my first lesson in how the medium itself influences the message; the “ghosts” weren’t errors, they were a collaboration with the machine.

Then I saw the ads for a lecture by Benoit Mandelbrot. They featured “turtle” fractals — vibrant, stacked-cardioid shapes that looked more like biology than geometry. It was a revelation: the world isn’t made of smooth Euclidean lines, but of “roughness.” Zooming into a Mandelbrot set revealed that the complexity wasn’t random; it was infinite detail living within a finite rule. As a developer, I realized that math had a tactile quality — a digital coastline that never smooths out, no matter how close you look. 🏔️

The Perceptual Pivot 🖼️

In the 90s, we turned to the “good enough” fidelity of MP3s and Wavelets. We stopped trying to save every bit and started asking: “What does a human actually need to experience?” We began to prioritize perceptual fidelity — understanding that if the human eye or ear doesn’t miss the data, the “lossy” compression is a masterpiece of efficiency. We eliminated unnecessary detail to serve the “Experience” of the user rather than the “Truth” of the data. 🎧

The Sculpture of Intent 🗿

Today, I use “Plan Mode” with AI to apply the most important lesson from my art teacher: The Block-In. You don’t start with the eyelashes; you start with the heavy masses. I block out the intent — the “clay cantilever” of a bold architectural move.

In sculpture, a cantilever is a limb — like a human arm — that reaches out into empty space. If you work in raw clay, that arm will eventually succumb to gravity and snap. It needs an armature, a hidden wire skeleton, to survive the physics of the real world. My AI partner acts as that structural engineer. I might want the flexibility of Flask — it feels like wet clay, giving me total control to shape limbs. But my partner sees the “gravity” of the project and insists on the “armature” of FastAPI, providing the type-safety and rigor needed to keep the structure from collapsing under its own weight.

Trusting the Viewport 🖼️

This is where Intellectual Humility becomes the ultimate tool. To pair with a bot, we must suppress our natural reluctance to let go of control or admit a mistake. We have to view the AI not as a competitor, but as a viewport into an infinite landscape of possible logic. We provide the coordinates; the AI provides the render.

Forty years later, I am still that student in the dark room, watchfully waiting for the next shape to emerge. The struggle to “let go” isn’t a loss of craft — it is the final high-pass filter. By shifting our viewport, we stop being mechanics of the mundane and start being curators of the miraculous. We find the one thing the math can never produce on its own: Meaning. ✨
