This week I was able to host a group of girls at my church for our (first) annual galentine’s day. We got together, left notes for each other, made bouquets, and encountered a sweet level of community that very little competes with. We enjoyed each others’ company and laughed for the sake of laughter.
I joke (only slightly) around at the fact that the reason I have a big(ger) house is so that I can fill it with a lot of people. It’s always nice for visiting family not to have to get a hotel every time they come to see us, but I absolutely love hosting. I love having people in my space. Having them there and letting them feel welcomed, happy, fed, and relaxed is one of the things that fills me up to the brim and overwhelms me. I love the residual mess that exists after they leave. The chairs are askew, the sink has a few more dishes (that my husband will be doing), and an emptiness reminds me that it was once full just a few hours ago.
Filling my house with 30+ people, at times, also fills me up because I know what an intentional, beautiful community is being developed in its walls. While community can and does happen in all sorts of places, I find a true honor in being able to hold the space for that to happen.
I remember in college where I didn’t have a deep connection with “home.” My dorm didn’t feel settled; my childhood home was long gone, and a pull-out couch in the living room awaited for me when I went back to California to visit family. Instead I found my home in the places and spaces that people opened up to me. It was a welcoming home without judgment. A fridge filled with anything I wanted to help myself to. And instead of white sterile couches, it was great warmth with snuggly blankets, and seating you can tuck your feet up on.
A little bit of chaos is worth any of the community that is built.
