  1. Leafr's Purpose and Emergence: Founded in 2022, Leafr is a platform connecting companies addressing climate change with top-tier freelance talent. It arose as a solution to the talent gap in the climate and sustainability sectors.

  2. Climate Space Talent Deficiency: Natural disasters are driving a surge in climate innovation and funding. Yet, the demand for skilled professionals in this area is outstripping supply, potentially leading to significant emission gaps in places like the UK.

  3. Clientele and Skills Spectrum: Leafr's primary audience includes manufacturers, retailers, climate startups, and consultancies. They host a diverse range of professionals, from climate experts to software developers and designers.

  4. Funding and Market Position: Despite significant investments in the climate sector, startups like Leafr face funding challenges. Still, Leafr stands out due to its traction, search engine popularity, and focus on specific investors.

  5. Nick's Background and Transition to Leafr: Nick's diverse experiences, from working in different regions to founding a social enterprise (VoicePal), culminated in him recognizing a market gap for climate freelancing, leading to Leafr's creation.

  6. Product Development Philosophy: Nick's belief in rapidly launching and iterating on minimum viable products contrasts with more traditional, perfection-focused approaches, as seen in consultancies.

  7. Customer Discovery Process at Leafr: The company places significant emphasis on customer discovery, carefully vetting freelancers, and regularly gauging business needs to refine their platform.

  8. Business Model and Partnerships: Leafr earns by facilitating transactions between freelancers and businesses. Additionally, they've partnered with the Oxford Smith School to provide selected freelancers with free courses on sustainability policy.

  9. Entrepreneurial Insights: Nick underlines the importance of only building products with a clear market need, the power of storytelling, and the value of real-world assumption testing. He also highlights that mistakes often bring valuable learnings.

  10. Challenges of Entrepreneurship: Both Nick and Yusuf discuss the mental challenges of entrepreneurship, from managing stress and frequent rejections to the importance of resilience, support systems, and maintaining a balanced perspective.

  • Introduction:

    • Leafr: Founded in 2022, it is a platform designed to connect companies actively combating climate change with top-tier freelance talent quickly. Leafr emerged as an answer to the widening talent gap in the climate and sustainability sectors.

  • Problem Statement:

    • Climate Space Talent Deficiency: With the increasing occurrence of natural disasters like wildfires, droughts, and heatwaves, there is a surge in technical innovation, funding, and favorable regulation in the climate sector. However, those leading sustainability projects report difficulty in finding professionals to execute these projects due to a vast skills gap.

    • This shortage is mainly because society has never had to decarbonize before, making the required skill set scarce. Even though the interest to work in the climate space is growing, the demand for climate skills is expanding at twice the rate of its supply.

    • In the UK, there's a predicted need to slash emissions by about 400 million tonnes by 2050. This goal will create numerous jobs, but there is an anticipated gap of about half a million workers. This skills gap could equate to a 30 million tonnes emission gap.

  • Clientele and Focus:

    • Leafr primarily caters to companies ranging from small-scale with 50 employees to larger ones with a few thousand employees. Their target audience includes manufacturers, retailers, climate startups, and consultancies looking to reduce their carbon footprint but lack the necessary in-house expertise.

  • Skills Spectrum on Leafr:

    • While Leafr houses professionals with hard-core climate skills, it also serves as a platform for professionals like software developers, copywriters, and designers who want to contribute to the climate sector.

  • Funding and Position in the Market:

    • The climate sector experienced a significant influx of funding with over one trillion invested in the previous year. Despite the funding boom, startups, including Leafr, find it challenging to secure funding. However, Leafr's traction, popularity (ranking first on Google for 'climate freelancing'), and focus on angel investors and specific VCs give it an edge.

  • Global Perspective:

    • A Singapore-based study indicated about 70% of small to mid-sized organizations are eager to initiate sustainability projects but lack the skills and knowledge to start.

  • Background:

    • Initially uncertain about career direction post-university, Nick joined a consultancy.

    • He found a perfect project fit in East Africa and excelled in product building.

    • Led teams in regions like East Africa, Portugal, the U.S., and the UK to develop products and services.

    • In late 2019, Nick founded VoicePal, a social enterprise aimed at addressing elderly loneliness.

    • While working with VoicePal, Nick mentored climate startups and pursued a climate sustainability-focused MBA, eager to understand business scalability.

  • Transition to Leafr:

    • Although VoicePal addressed a significant issue, Nick faced challenges scaling the enterprise.

    • His MBA program deepened his understanding of the climate space, particularly the business and climate intersection.

    • After the MBA, Nick noticed a gap in the market: a lack of platforms offering freelance jobs in climate and sustainability.

    • With this insight, he launched a rudimentary version of Leafr on a Slack channel, serving as a bridge between companies seeking talent and professionals offering relevant skills.

    • The immediate positive response, even with a basic site, confirmed the demand and potential of the platform.

  • Product Development Philosophy:

    • Nick believes in launching a minimum viable product (MVP) quickly, even if it's not perfect.

    • The approach contrasts with his experience at consultancy firms, where product perfection and vast resources were prioritized.

    • Nick advocates for rapid iteration based on user feedback, ensuring the product evolves in the right direction.

Insight: Nick's journey emphasizes the power of identifying market gaps, testing MVPs rapidly, and iterating based on feedback. His experiences at larger corporations have shaped his lean and agile approach to product development with Leafr.

  • Customer Discovery Process at Leafr: Nick emphasized the importance of customer discovery, stating that the most effective way is by making a sale. He has conducted hundreds of interviews to vet freelancers for Leafr. The company is very conscious of its selections due to concerns about unqualified or dishonest individuals in the climate space. They also actively gauge the needs and challenges of businesses to refine their platform.

  • Challenges and Findings: One challenge businesses face is defining projects when they only understand the problem. They might know they have a sustainability issue but might not know how to articulate it in a job description. Nick also shared that Leafr has a two-month waiting list for freelancers, disproving his initial belief that they would struggle to attract talent.

  • Business Model: Leafr primarily operates by facilitating transactions between freelancers and businesses, taking a cut from these transactions. There are no membership fees for either freelancers or companies.

  • Partnership with Oxford Smith School: Leafr has a learning agreement with the Oxford Smith School. They provide a course on sustainability policy to selected Leafr freelancers from the global south at no charge. The course typically costs over a thousand pounds. Leafr aims to identify skill gaps and work with education providers to address them.

  • Oxford Network's Role in Leafr’s Growth: Nick highlighted the substantial support and talent he has derived from the Oxford network. This includes partnerships, staffing decisions, and having an advisory board primarily composed of Oxford affiliates.

  • Entrepreneurial Insights: Nick emphasized the importance of not building a product unless there's a clear need. He also talked about the significance of storytelling for both customers and investors. Furthermore, he highlighted the need to test assumptions in the real world, as many hypotheses often turn out to be incorrect.

Nick concluded by emphasizing that the most valuable insights often come from mistakes and challenges faced along the entrepreneurial journey.

  • Stress Management:

    • Nick emphasizes the challenges of managing stress as an entrepreneur.

    • Strong support systems, like his partner and flatmate (Hugo from Nuisance Drinks), are crucial.

    • Activities like meditation, exercise, and reduced alcohol consumption are beneficial.

    • It's important to remind oneself of the passion and fulfillment in what they're doing despite the daily challenges.

  • Mindset:

    • Narratives play a significant role in how one feels. Entrepreneurs need to be careful about focusing too much on stressors and should instead remind themselves of the love for their work.

    • Resilience builds over time. Analogizing with boxing, Nick mentions that in entrepreneurship, you get used to setbacks, much like a boxer gets used to being punched.

  • Rejections and Building Character:

    • Yusuf points out that unlike many professions, entrepreneurs face constant rejection, be it from customers or investors. This frequent rejection, especially for early-stage entrepreneurs, sharpens character rapidly.

    • Yusuf shares his personal experience transitioning into sales, facing challenges, and learning rapidly.

  • Coping Strategies:

    • Drawing parallels from personal life can help in managing stress. Yusuf cites his experiences singing in bands and compares public speaking's anxiety to performing on stage.

    • Nick adds that things often aren't as daunting once you start them.

    • Yusuf concludes by emphasizing the need for a balanced perspective – being optimistic about startups but also realistic about the potential for setbacks.
