Chris Burkhard · Chris’s Substack

Welcome to The Spark List, a collection of five ideas, insights, and actions that have challenged my thinking and fueled my week. I hope one of them sparks an idea that helps you lead, live, or work smarter.

The Cafe on the Edge of the World“ by John Strelecky

I recently picked up this quick but profound book. It centers on a simple premise: a lost traveler stumbles upon a small cafe in the middle of nowhere and finds three questions on the back of the menu. Why are you here? Do you fear death? Are you fulfilled? It is a wonderful narrative that forces you to step away from the daily grind and re-examine your ultimate purpose.

Shifting Your Luck

“Luck flows through people and travels by conversation. The people you talk to determine the opportunities you find. Keep talking to the same people, keep finding the same opportunities. Start talking to new people, start finding new opportunities. If you want different luck, start walking into different rooms.”

This anonymous insight is a fantastic reminder for leaders and professionals alike. If you feel stuck in a rut, your breakthrough might simply require changing the rooms you frequent.

Wisdom for the Career Journey

I spent time reviewing Ryan Holiday’s compilation of 37 pieces of career advice he wishes he had known earlier. One of the most high-impact takeaways is the importance of finding your own metric for success rather than adopting someone else’s. In a world full of external noise, protecting your timeline and staying focused on your unique lane is essential for long-term endurance.

Overcoming Fear

“Lincoln’s life wrote a great truth: Unless you give up, you will not be defeated.” — J.D. Rockefeller.

Culled from a letter written by Rockefeller to his son on the 100th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln’s birth, this short piece of wisdom reminds us that failure is never a permanent state; it only becomes final the moment we stop trying.

Outside Insights Podcast

In our most recent episode, I sat down with workplace culture expert Stephanie Lemek to tackle one of the most critical topics facing organizations today: workplace mental health. We moved past the surface-level talking points and dove into how leaders can build genuinely supportive environments. We discussed how to spot burnout before it fractures a team, why mental health resources are a core business strategy, and how leaders can model healthy boundaries themselves.

Progress rarely starts with a grand, dramatic gesture. It usually begins quietly, with a single decision to change how you spend your day or how you view your progress. If something here sparked an idea for you, share it with someone who might need the same nudge.

Until next time, friends,

Chris
