Welcome to The Spark List, a collection of five ideas, insights, and actions that have challenged my thinking and fueled my week. I hope one of them sparks an idea that helps you lead, live, or work smarter.
I have been spending time with the book “The Parents Tao Te Ching: A New Interpretation,” which looks at ancient wisdom through the lens of modern parenting. What strikes me most is how many parallel lines there are between raising children and leading people.
Poem 50 in particular really hits home for me. It explores the idea that we must give up control to actually have it:
If you are always worried
About your children’s safety,
You will bind yourself,
And them,
In cords of tension
Always close to you,
You will bring yourself,
And them,
Only pain.
If you release them
To live their life fully,
And face their death serenely,
Your nights will be filled
With restful sleep.
As leaders and as parents, our instinct is often to protect, micromanage, and hold tight. But real growth, for both our teams and our families, requires us to breathe out and build the trust required to let go.
I love this thought from author James Clear:
“Elimination solves many problems. For one, you won’t have to do the thing you eliminate. But also, you free up time, attention, and resources to do a better job on what remains. Before trying to be more productive, be more ruthless about what gets cut.”
We live in a culture that rewards the hustle and constantly tells us to add more to our plates. But true efficiency is not about doing more things poorly. It is about doing fewer things exceptionally well. What can you eliminate this week to free up your focus?
“Forgive yourself for not knowing earlier what only time could teach.”
This anonymous quote is a gentle but necessary reminder for anyone carrying the weight of past mistakes. We often look back at old decisions with the wisdom we have today, which simply is not fair to the person we used to be. Growth takes time, and experience is a patient teacher. Give yourself some grace.
I have been reflecting on a classic piece of wisdom from the team at Daily Stoic about the concept of “tying yourself to the mast.” In the old legends, Odysseus knew he would not be strong enough to resist the temptation of the Sirens, so he had his crew physically bind him to the ship mast ahead of time.
In leadership and life, relying purely on willpower is a losing game. The best leaders build systems, boundaries, and guardrails into their lives before the temptation or the stress arrives. If you know you are prone to checking emails at midnight or overcommitting your schedule, what guardrails can you put in place today to protect your time tomorrow?
In our most recent episode, I sat down with Logan Herring, the CEO of The WRK Group, to discuss his incredible work leading a six-hundred-million-dollar community revitalization effort in Wilmington. Logan has a radical and refreshing perspective on social impact. He rejects the traditional, passive mindset of a charity and instead operates his organization like a disciplined, upstream business.
We discussed his ultimate North Star, which is to completely put himself out of business by successfully ending intergenerational poverty. We also talked about how respecting community members as true customers, rather than as charity cases, shifts the entire leadership dynamic. It is a masterclass in how to build systemic, lasting change.

Progress rarely starts with a grand, dramatic gesture. It usually begins quietly, with a single decision to change how you spend your day or how you view your progress.
If something here sparked an idea for you, share it with someone who might need the same nudge.
Until next time, friends,
Chris
