Welcome to The Spark List, a collection of five ideas, insights, and actions that have challenged my thinking and fueled my week. I hope one of them sparks an idea that helps you lead, live, or work smarter.

True clarity rarely hits you when you’re staring at a packed calendar. I recently came across a piece advocating for the 24-Hour Micro-Retreat, and it really resonated with my view on executive endurance.

As leaders, we often think a vacation needs to be a week-long commitment to reset our brains. In reality, stepping entirely away from your daily environment for just one night (no laptop, no strategic planning, just space) is enough to break the cycle of decision fatigue completely. (We touched on a similar concept in our past blog, When I Discovered Self-Care & Never Looked Back, on why scheduling recovery is essential for long-term leadership).

  • The Spark: Block out one 24-hour window this next month. Pick a spot an hour away, leave the work tasks at home, and give your mind permission to wander.

We are conditioned to be accommodating, predictable, and reasonable. But as Justin Welsh highlighted in a recent edition of his newsletter,Unreasonable, the traits that lead to breakthrough success often look highly unreasonable to outsiders.

It’s unreasonable to turn down good money to protect your time. It’s unreasonable to stick to a process when everyone else is cutting corners. But protecting your vision requires boundaries that others might find rigid.

  • The Spark: Where are you being “too reasonable” in your business or life at the expense of your actual goals? Identify one boundary you need to firmly enforce this week.

Most people use AI as a fast typewriter, asking it to write an email, a post, or a report. A brilliant insight from Wondertools suggests we need to Flip the Script on AI by treating it as an interviewer rather than a ghostwriter.

Instead of telling AI to write something for you, prompt it to ask you five hard questions about your topic. By answering the questions, you clarify your own unique insights, which it can then help format. You keep your authentic voice; the AI just extracts it.

  • The Spark: Next time you are stuck on a strategy or a piece of writing, tell your AI tool: “Act as an expert consultant. Ask me 3 penetrating questions about my goal so we can build a plan together.”

Ryan Holiday recently shared a profound reflection titled 5 Years of Lessons From Running My Own Bookstore. Even if you are not in retail, his takeaways on small business ownership are universal truths for any entrepreneur.

My favorite insight from his journey? “You don’t look at the mantle, you look at the messy reality of the daily grind.” True business endurance isn’t built on glamorous milestones; it’s built on enjoying the small, repetitive, everyday operations that keep the lights on.

  • The Spark: Take a step back and look at your “sandbox,” the core operations of your business. What is one small, unglamorous daily process you can improve or show more appreciation for today?

When building a company, we often try to hire people who think, work, or talk like us. But in my recent podcast conversation with Sam Calagione, he shared a brilliant metaphor for building a high-performing culture: viewing your team as a band where everyone plays a unique instrument.

A great song doesn’t come from five lead guitarists ripping solos at the same time; it comes from rhythm, balance, and knowing when to let someone else take center stage. Sam broke down how leaning into each team member’s distinct “instrument” creates harmony, prevents costly missteps, and builds a business that lasts. (If this resonates, check out our classic conversation on Culture Reflects Leadership with Arnie Malham for more on intentionally building cohesive, high-performing environments).

  • The Spark: Look at your current team. Are you trying to get everyone to play the same note, or are you giving each person the space to master their distinct role in the arrangement?

If you enjoyed this week’s list, consider forwarding it to a colleague or friend who is working to scale their leadership and life.

Until next time, friends,

Chris
