Dear Readers,

This week on Out of Programme, we’re joined by Dr James Somauroo — a former anaesthetist who nearly raised a £40 million health tech fund before pivoting to build one of the sector’s most respected communications agencies. His journey from the son of a Mauritian nurse who dreamed of consultant status for his child, to realising that his true calling lay in “fixing the system” rather than treating patients, is a masterclass in career reinvention.

👨‍👦 The Immigrant Father’s Dream - James never felt drawn to medicine; his Mauritian nurse father had embedded the idea that becoming a doctor meant security. Only after qualifying did he realise his skills lay elsewhere.

🔄 From Treating Patients to Fixing Systems - Small frustrations sparked James’s pivot: wondering why 29 of 30 hospital printers were broken. He became addicted to fixing systemic problems and seeing the disproportionate results.

🏛️ Learning the Policy Game - The Bruce Keough Fellowship gave James his first taste of life outside clinical practice. He learned how policy levers work — how a recommendation can become a contractual requirement across the NHS.

🤝 A Serendipitous Meeting in Shoreditch - Bumping into Professor Tony Young on a Shoreditch street led to James helping set up the Clinical Entrepreneur Programme. It was a lesson in how opportunities emerge through messy, personal interactions.

💰 The £40 Million Fund That Never Was - After rising to co-director of the Digital Health London Accelerator, James nearly closed a £40 million health tech fund with £24 million verbally committed. Then COVID hit, the investor pulled out, and the collapse forced him to confront what he actually wanted.

💡 The Liberating Realisation - James’s key insight when starting SomX was simple: a business is just an agreement and a bank account. This gave him “utter freedom” to build on his own terms.

James’s episode is proof that:

  • 🧭 Being pushed into a career is different from being pulled toward one — and understanding which force is driving you matters enormously for long-term fulfilment

  • 🎲 Serendipity favours those who increase their surface area for luck — showing up consistently, doing the fundamentals well, and staying open to unexpected encounters

  • 💼 Doctors bring unique value to health tech — particularly in marketing and communications, where clinical credibility and understanding of the system are genuine differentiators

  • 🤝 Building a business with your life partner is possible — when you share values, divide responsibilities clearly, and bootstrap deliberately rather than chasing venture capital

As James says:

“Find what pulls you in, not what pushes you out. Don’t take any port in the storm.”
