The number of confirmed Ebola Bundibugyo virus disease cases reported in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) since the outbreak started in May has eclipsed the 5,000 mark with 5,021, in six provinces and 55 health zones, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).
2,378 confirmed deaths were also reported.
155 health workers were infected, while 45 of them died.
Director-General of the World Health Organization, Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said the following concerning the outbreak:
The Ebola outbreak in DRC remains a public health emergency of international concern, following the advice of today’s WHO Emergency Committee meeting.
We call for the cooperation of all governments and all partners, working together as one, to scale up efforts even further, and raise the resources needed to protect communities over the coming months.
Updated recommendations to the government of DRC and other countries at risk will be issued in the coming days.
