Tom Kimmerer · Our Trees

Note: We have two stories for you today, the Tree Story and, coming later today, a story about how I came to spend my life among trees, with a nod to the Julliard School.

When I began teaching people about trees in Kentucky, we were always thrilled to come upon a red mulberry, Morus rubra. Although it is found throughout the Eastern Deciduous Forest, it is not common anywhere. It is a tree of dense forests, especially on lower slopes and stream bottoms. It is very shade tolerant, growing under larger trees and with the thin leaves typical of shaded trees. The fruits are abundant and delicious. So, here we have a polite, not very prominent tree native to our forests. Its existence is now threatened by the introduced white mulberry.
