Needle Drop Friday: 7.3.26

Welcome to another Needle Drop……..errr…..Friday?

Yes, I know it’s not Friday. It’s Sunday. I’ve had a rough week folks and I really wasn’t feeling up to doing any writing on Friday so I’m giving this a shot today. There isn’t a whole lot of stuff to talk about like there was last week but there’s enough to mention.

I don’t have anything interesting to say to start things off so I’m just going to get into it. Here are the tunes that perked my ears up.

First up is a 5-piece from Los Angeles. Hot Load released Realized via Drunken Sailor Records. I’m not sure what this is genre-wise. Is it punk? Is it metal? Both? Give it a listen and let me know what you think. Whatever it is I think it’ll get your morning going.

This next one is some punk rock from Portland. The band is Smirk and the album is Speculative Fiction. It was put out by Smoking Room Records. I think they are from New York City but I am not certain. I couldn’t find a lot of information about these guys. To be honest, I didn’t try very hard. They play a sort of minimalist type of garage punk.

I’m going to slow things down a bit with this next on. It comes from Los Angeles-based indie pop band Mirrorball. It’s a self-titled EP. I could only find it on Spotify and Apple but not Bandcamp. They have been compared to Beach House and Stereolab. I just think it’s dreamy mellow indie music.

This next one is kind of mellow too but not as mellow as Mirrorball. Mary in the Junkyard is an indie rock band from London. Role Model Hermit is the 2nd release. It was put out by All My Friends Records. They are a mix of art rock, post-punk, and math-rock. I couldn’t for the life of me tell you what other bands they sound like. A couple of the songs gave me a dash of a Mazzy Star vibe.

This last entry comes to us from a band put together by members of Iron Chic and Broadcaster. Constant Action is the debut EP from Partials. My buddy Dave wrote a review of this EP. You can read that here. This is good stuff and definitely the highlight of this week’s Needle Drop.
