Food For Thought #1

Here is something new for you readers!

Sometimes in my “regular” weekly posts, well, when they WERE weekly, I would do a food related segment. I would talk about new places that I had eaten throughout that week and give some thoughts on them. I thought about doing it in the last post but decided that it was going to take up too much room because I had a lot to talk about in regards to this topic. I have a lot more than just a week to talk about though so strap in! Also, if you are hungry, I would suggest maybe going to get something to eat first and then come back and read this. Unless, of course, you want to read this to get an idea of what it is that you want to eat.

Okay, enough intro jibber jabber. Let’s eat!!!

THE GOOSE: www.goosedeli.com - 1210 N Hudson Ave, Oklahoma City

I found this one at random. To be completely accurate, my niece and I found this one at random. Completely by accident. We were looking for a different sandwich place and discovered that it had been closed. Our search recommended this place and I am glad they did. I forgot when we went into it for the first time. I want to say it has been about a month and half maybe? In any case, I have been there 3 times now. What I am wondering is, considering I have multiple foodie friends that do blogs and food themed content creation, why I had never heard of this place before! My friends know that I like sandwiches so what the hell?!? Anyway, this place is great. Their sandwiches are top notch. As I mentioned, I have been there 3 times. So far, I have tried 2 different sandwiches. The first time I went, I tried out their signature Goose. The Goose is an Italian with a few differences from what you would typically see in an Italian sub. First, instead of lettuce, they use lemon-tossed arugula. Good stuff. Also, typically, I would see provolone used in an Italian sub but their Goose uses asiago instead. An interested and delicious change. Another thing that I found different in this one from most Italian subs I have tried is that I could actually taste the capicola. That is, in other Italian subs, I knew the capicola was there but couldn’t really tell the difference between it and any normal ham. With this one, I could actually taste the capicola. The 2nd time I went I got The Uncle Philly. This one is, as the name suggests, their take on the Philly cheesesteak. It was good, the meat was delicious and I liked how the onions and peppers were incorporated into it. However, I’ve had better cheesesteaks elsewhere. Here’s a picture of it.

The 3rd time I went I had The Mother Goose. The Mother Goose is essentially the same thing as The Goose but with double the meat and also adds beefsteak tomatoes and a basil spread. Overall, good subs. Go check them out if you haven’t already.

GOLDEN PHOENIX: www.goldenphoenix-ok.com - 2728 N Classen Blvd, Oklahoma City

This one isn’t new to me at all. I have been there several times. But since I have been there recently (2 or 3 times actually) I thought I’d mention it. Golden Phoenix is, of course, an Asian restaurant. It’s not a buffet and it’s not a take out (although I’m sure they will fix your order to go). It’s more a family style place. I almost always get the kung pao chicken. It is their kung pao chicken that is in the photo above. In my opinion, Golden Phoenix is the best place for Chinese food in the metro.

UMIYA SUSHI: umiyafrisco.com - 3141 Preston Road, Frisco, Texas

While this place is called Umiya Sushi, it is not JUST a sushi place. Although their sushi is fantastic. I first went to this place last year with JD and his girlfriend Julie while we were at Rebel Scum Con. We all really liked it and wound up going again when we were down there for Rebel Scum Con again. Rebel Scum Con, by the way, is a Star Wars fan convention. So what we really like about this place is that it is an all you can eat establishment. Not a buffet, however. They give you a menu and you order what you want from it. You keep the menu because when they come back around you can pick other items to try out. Really good stuff. Here are some items that we tried this last time we were there (along with photos).

This is the gyoza. A gyoza, if you don’t know, is a pan fried dumpling. Their gyoza is pretty standard but still delicious.

This is the tempura shrimp. Very good tempura shrimp! I think between JD and I, we probably ordered this dish half a dozen times that night.

This is one of the sushi items that JD and I shared. The ones at the top of the image are crab meat sushi. Very tasty. The other one (with the black seaweed wrapped around it) is a crispy chicken roll. Still very tasty but I did not go back for seconds on that one.

This is their chicken fried rice. Without a doubt, the very best fried rice I have EVER had IN MY LIFE! I think I had at least 4 bowls of this. JD had a couple himself.

Okay folks, this one was the star of the evening. I had so many of these. I had not had one before but I saw it on the menu and HAD to try it. It is called a sushi taco. First off, yes, that is an original Pringles potato chip serving as the “taco shell.” Inside the sushi taco was salmon, some other seafood (I can’t remember what it was), some guacamole, some wasabi, and some other special sauce that they put on it. Due to the amount of wasabi on this thing, it was pretty hot (spicy hot) but it was the most amazing sushi that I have ever had. It was so damn good! JD ordered multiple times as well. If anybody in the OKC area knows where I can find one of these, please tell me because I HAVE TO HAVE ANOTHER ONE!!!

Pretty standard sushi here. These are all their California rolls. Very tasty. Probably the best California rolls I have had but, to be honest, I haven’t had a lot of them in my life because up until recently, I was actually not that big a fan of sushi in general. I have only recently came to start liking it.

Anyway, that is it for the stuff we ate at Umiya.

SIMPLE SIMON’S PIZZA: simplesimonspizza.com - 10901 NW 23rd, Oklahoma City

Here is a pizza place that I have never tried. I was hungry and had a hankering for pizza. I remember passing this place quite a few times and figured I’d go ahead and give it a try. You can’t go wrong with pizza. It’s pretty hard to fuck up pizza. I mean, pizza is kind of like sex. When it is good, it is REALLY GREAT. But even when it’s bad, still pretty good and it’s still pizza. 

I ordered a supreme. Pretty simple toppings. Pepperoni, sausage, mushrooms, onions, green peppers, and cheese.

So first off, this place had Pepsi products to drink. I’m not a fan. Strike one. Actually the only strike. The pizza was good. Good amount of toppings. They didn’t skimp out on then cheese (or any of the toppings for that matter). All around good pizza. The outer crust was a tiny bit oily but because of the rest of the pizza, I was able to overlook it. Good, solid choice for pizza. I would recommend it. However, I wouldn’t say that this is going to be my go to every time I want pizza. There are other places that I would rather go to. But it’s good. Don’t pass it up.
