Issue 2: Research With Epieos
This issue will look at what can be done with the web based tool Epieos. As this is a look at a specific tool it will not follow the 📒Basic, 🧪Intermediate and 🧠Advanced sections. Instead we will provide an overview of the tool and how it can be used. Enjoy!
Level - 📒Basic
Focus - Email / Phone Number
Cost - Free to €29.99pm
First we will look at the email reverse lookup. Let's face it, an email address is often the gateway to a wealth of information. It can be a key piece of the puzzle in many investigations, from identifying individuals to uncovering their online presence. But what can you really do with just an email address?
Epieos provides a wealth of information to start off any investigation when you have an email address. A basic search will provide results from Google, Gravatar, Trello, and Strava among other platforms. With a paid account even more access opens up with results from LinkedIn, FitBit and Substack to name a few.
Using test@example.com let’s see what we can find.
We get 5 results for the subjects email address and our first result is from Have I Been Pwned (hibp).
We will look at hibp in greater detail in another issue which will focus on breached data and how it can be used. However, to start with we can see that the subject’s email address has been found 219 times, you may want to check the listed platforms for an account linked to our subject.
Next, we can see a result from Skype. Again this is likely something that we will look at in greater detail in another issue. But for now Epieos has pulled through accounts linked to that email address, including the user’s name, id, Country, and linked photo. Above is just one of the examples.
These are just two of the five results, we would want to go through each result individually, recording new identifies and platforms to interrogate.
Epieos also provides a phone number search. Let take a look at the following, which has been redacted for privacy +33601020***.
We only get one result for this number, but it matches a Skype account. Once again we are provided with the account information such as name and photo.
In future issues, we'll delve deeper into more advanced techniques for extracting information from an email address, including using specialized tools and employing more sophisticated search methods.
