Birth is focus
One breath at a time
I was made to birth
You were made to be birthed
So we birth together
Guided by our innate knowing
Mother and child tango
I trust you, you trust me
Using synchronistic telepathy
I follow you
You follow me
I release control by surrendering to each now moment.
Letting go of my mind so I can hear my ancestors’ whisper.
We are here, you’re not alone. Let us lead the way.
I welcome each intense sensation knowing it brings me closer to holding you.
I choose an active birth, doing the same thing every contraction.
Hands on the wall, hips circling, moaning - deep, long, and primal.
Visualising the baby’s head moving down like a corkscrew.
My husband, Peter says, “Stay low and deep. Open for our baby, open for our baby.”
So my cervix opens.
I move freely between contractions, circling my hips on the medicine ball.
My midwife leaves me to it, quietly watching from afar.
I am safe.
I am empowered.
You and I are connected.
This is our first conversation.
I will follow your cues.
I’m pacing and suddenly overcome with feelings of euphoria, ecstasy.
As tingling relief flows over my body, all I can say is, “Oh my God, this feels so beautiful. I feel ecstatic. I am off my face.”
Dropping to my knees, hands on the wall, my head falls back as I intuitively release sound.
I began singing like the Little Mermaid.
“Ah ah ahh, ah ah ah, ah ah ahh”
Feeling like a Humpback Whale, I allow each octave to spiral upwards.
Up and up, higher and higher and higher.
“Ah ah ahh, ah ah ah, ah ah ahh”
Until I hit the highest note.
Oxytocin surges through me, creating an almighty full body orgasm.
I place my hands on my belly and hunch over as waves and waves of pleasure ripple throughout my whole being.
It takes my breath away leaving me shuddering and whimpering.
I never knew this was possible during birth.
In the next breath I had the urge to push and I brought our second baby into the world.
The midwife swooped in and caught the newborn.
Love at first sight.
No doctors, machines, or needles.
This baby is perfect as she is.
Our birth, our way.
