In the middle of Hialeah’s warehouse district, a 31,000-square-foot facility is reimagining how homes are built. Inside, a 975-square-foot model home demonstrates how World Homes Island is proving that efficiency and resilience can coexist — right here in Miami.

This is the company’s first model home in the U.S., showcasing cutting-edge technology, sleek design, and the potential for large-scale impact.

“World Homes is both a manufacturer and a tech company,” explains Charles Hedensten, CEO and founder. “We build all our components and parts, we assemble them, and then we use technology to improve them. So it’s a fully engineered house.”

The model we toured is a one-bedroom “core” home that can expand over time. By simply popping out a side window and adding exterior modules, homeowners can grow their space as their needs change. “You can expand your house at any moment,” Hedensten said.

Affordable Luxury, Designed for Generations

The standard one-bedroom unit includes a gourmet kitchen, ADA-accessible hallways, and a spacious bathroom — all with rich colors and textures that reflect thoughtful design.

“We want you to feel pride in the house you’re coming home to,” Hedensten said.

Each home is designed for a 200-year lifespan, built with advanced concrete technologies, steel joists, and polycarbonate windows that are stronger, lighter, and more energy-efficient than glass. Features such as solar panels and atmospheric water generation make it possible to live fully off-grid.

Walls are 12 inches thick — “bunker level,” as Hedensten describes them — capable of withstanding extreme weather and time itself. “It’s designed to handle weight, impact, and last a long time,” Hedensten noted. “Multiple generations can grow into this house.”

World Homes Island manufactures all its building materials in-house, casting heavy concrete panels directly in the warehouse. By batching its own concrete, the company lowers costs while maintaining high quality — an essential step toward making affordability scalable.

At current low-volume production, homes start around $350 per square foot (approximately $340,000). The goal is to reduce that to $200 per square foot as production ramps up.

“That would be a major innovation in this industry,” Hedensten added.

Innovation Built into Every Wall

Each unit features quick-connect wiring harnesses, removable ceiling panels for easy upgrades, and ADA-compliant layouts. Sustainability is built in from the start, with renewable energy, water systems, and waste solutions for self-sufficient living.

Even the design psychology is intentional. Inspired by architect Don Ruggles, the team uses darker contrasts and elevated ceilings to promote comfort and well-being.

“If you look at a lot of new homes, you see white interiors — and that’s the worst thing for your brain,” Hedensten said. “We use contrast and height. These little details actually allow people to feel comfortable.”

Why Miami? A Hub for Innovation and Impact

Miami isn’t just where World Homes Island operates — it’s where the company is shaping the future of housing. The Hialeah warehouse serves as a production and distribution center, creating local jobs and advancing the city’s innovation ecosystem.

The company recently partnered with Florida International University (FIU) to train workers in manufacturing and assembly through a new certification program.

“You want to bring in local people because they understand the lay of the land better. They can give quicker feedback when we’re building in different areas,” Hedensten said.

Miami’s climate and exposure to hurricanes make it an ideal testing ground for resilient housing. Partnering with FIU’s Wall of Wind facility, World Homes Island is testing for hurricanes, earthquakes, fires, and flood resistance — long before the first home is sold.

A Blueprint for the Future of Affordable Housing

By combining high-quality materials, manufacturing efficiency, and human-centered design, World Homes Island is positioning Miami as a global leader in next-generation homebuilding.

“Most builders are still using cheap materials and high labor costs,” Hedensten said. “Our costs are higher in materials but lower in labor, so we can offer a better product at a better price.”

The company’s long-term vision is to build one million homes per year globally, all designed for resilience, sustainability, and affordability.

As Hedensten emphasized: “We’re future-proofing the home — building for families today and generations tomorrow.”
