I’m hosting a karaoke night.

The event is in partnership with The Offset and is featuring What Am I, A Deer? by Polly Barton, one of their recent selections.

The Offset is Book of the Month’s new collection focused on indie and international voices, for readers who seek artistic expression over commercial appeal, elevated prose over action-packed plots, or the unconventional over the mainstream.

If you haven’t heard of What Am I, A Deer? yet it recalls Vincenzo Latronico’s Perfection in its wry observation of millennial ennui, crossed with the emotionally microscopic sensibility of Sally Rooney.

At the center of the book is karaoke: the ritual the narrator practices alone in a soundproofed box, belting out power ballads and reverting to her prelapsarian Céline Dion self. Bursts of capitalized pop lyrics punctuate the prose and unabashedly clichéd lines giving voice to feelings the narrator struggles to articulate (The Guardian.)

So naturally, we’re doing a karaoke night. We’ll start the night with a light discussion, a shorter version of our usual meetings. Then we’ll dim the lights, turn up the music, and sing.

The event is free and when you RSVP, you’ll get an email from Book of The Month with details on how to get a free copy of the book, too!
