  • The frozen-pasta deal that explains all of sports media.

  • You’re not the talent. You’re the distribution.

  • Apple, the NFL, and a Duke freshman are telling you the same thing

Today felt like 6 unrelated stories until you notice it’s all connected → Apple is putting live baseball inside their headset in 8K/3D, 7 Friday-night games between August 28 and September 18, 5 of them fully immersive. The NFL pre-sold a reported $6 billion in ads before a meaningful snap. ESPN is one painful year into swapping its fat cable pipe for a direct one, trading around 100 million households that never watched for a smaller number who’ll pay $29.99 a month. Different jerseys, same game.

It’s not the thing on the screen anymore, it’s the pipe that delivers it and the relationship at the far end. The NFL isn’t selling football, it’s selling the last moment in media where everyone shows up at once and charging a toll to reach that crowd. Whoever owns the pipe between the game and the fan owns the future.

So why does a show for athletes who build care more than a normal media newsletter? Because a five-star Duke Freshman named Deron Rippey Jr. just signed with a frozen-pasta brand and took equity reported under 1% plus a modest cash piece instead of cashing a flat check. The stake may be worth nothing now but that’s not the point. Somebody in that 18-year-old’s circle understood the brand was buying his distribution.

Once you see that the audience is the asset, the NIL vending machine looks completely under-utilized by athletes with growing audiences. Your window on the field is brutally short, but your distribution closes only if you let it. So on your next opportunity, ask one free question: is there a version where you own a piece instead of getting paid once or twice? Most of the time it’s no. Some of the time that yes is the difference between a memory and a stake in something much larger.
