A Guide to Farm Stores in NYC

One of my favorite weekend activities in NYC is wandering through a farmers market. But as much as I love them, I always wish they were open more often.

I grew up in New Hampshire, where stopping at local farm stands to pick up fresh produce was just part of everyday life. So recently, I started looking for NYC’s version of that - farm stores that bring the best of local farms into the city all week long.

Over the past few weeks, I’ve been on a mission to find as many as I could. These are the little shops where you can pick up fresh eggs and cheeses, local produce, wildflowers, homemade jams, grass fed meats, and pantry staples that feel more Hudson Valley than Manhattan.

They aren’t quite grocery stores, and they aren’t quite farmers markets either. Think of them as little shops bringing the best of nearby farms into the city.

Here are a few worth adding to your list:

This is one of the most unique stores in NYC, and I need more people to know about it. Millport Dairy is run by an Amish farmer who makes the incredible commitment of traveling ~3 hours each way from his farm in Pennsylvania to his Upper West Side storefront four days a week (read that again!).

The shop itself is no frills, but I think that’s part of the charm. There isn’t even a big storefront sign - just keep an eye out for the little yellow sign on the sidewalk! Inside, you’ll find farm fresh eggs, cheeses, seasonal produce, baked goods, pickled vegetables, meats, and other homemade goods. I love that this little storefront gives New Yorkers a direct connection to a family farm, and it’s exactly the kind of place I hope people continue to support.
