Holding the Mirror

Fabio Salvadori · One Apple A Day

We put immense pressure on people to be the candle.

We celebrate the spark, the visible creator, the voice at the centre of the room. We urge everyone to shine bright, often forgetting that a candle burning in isolation consumes itself quickly and lights only a small circle before the wind takes it.

Edith Wharton wrote that “there are two ways of spreading light: be the candle or the mirror.”

It’s a beautiful distinction, but we can push it even further. A room isn’t lit by candles and mirrors alone. It needs the oxygen that lets the flame burn. It needs the glass shield that keeps the draft from blowing it out. It needs the hearth that holds the warmth when the spark fades.

Inspiration and vision are fundamental, but they are inherently fragile. Without an ecosystem to feed, protect, and amplify them, they remain fleeting moments.

And that ecosystem is not an abstract framework or an institutional structure. It is made of people. It is made of us, and built by the choices we make every day.

We create that ecosystem every time we choose to step out of the spotlight and embrace being the mirror. When we choose to reflect someone else’s spark, to clear the friction in their path, or to quietly offer the oxygen an idea needs to breathe, we shape the conditions for light to survive.

Let’s spread light, together.
