From Call Minutes to AI Interface: Why Voice Is Telcos’ Next Growth Engine

There’s a lot of talk about the next ‘killer’ app in the AI, 5G/6G era. But what if it’s sitting right under telcos’ noses?

There are already a large number of channels to manage – everything from text chat, to call centers to social media (and more) – but the latest channel to emerge is both an extension of something we’ve always had, as well as something quietly revolutionary.

AI wants a voice.

Or rather, it wants to use voice as the most natural interface there is with humans – and the technology is rapidly emerging to do just that.

Think about it? We use our voice long before we learn to write or type. And it’s far more efficient than banging away at a keyboard. We think at 150+ words per minute and type at ≤50. Typing is a bottleneck that still excludes millions, because most people aren’t that competent at it, and it requires literary skills (spelling, grammar, punctuation, reading) that many people struggle with.

But what if I told you that typing is soon to become a Web 1.0 relic?

And what if this revolution is already underway?

We’re rapidly moving from voice assistants to voice-native experiences, which are being baked directly into everything and across all industries.

Moving to voice:

• Delivers more inclusive services

• Unlocks faster idea generation

• Reduces friction

• Enables natural AI collaboration.

Voice is set to be THE defining interface for both simple queries and complex tasks. Consumers will get new capabilities within their smart homes so that they can give voice instructions rather than fighting through complex menus and having to resort to apps. And the next wave of enterprise apps will be voice-native, agentic AI-empowered and integrated with enterprise workflows.

What this means for telcos

This is great news for telcos because they are the masters of voice – it’s an industry they literally invented. And somebody has got to manage and host the voice interface as well as carry voice over distances.

The opportunity is huge, but the risk is that, yet again, telcos miss out because they can’t get their heads out of the old world fast enough.

With every other industry scrambling to enable a voice experience and bolt it onto their stack, it’s not an opportunity they can afford to miss. And they’re absurdly well placed to take advantage of this move, because they already own the stack – high-quality voice, low-latency edge, trusted identity, sovereign compute, billing relationships. To open up this opportunity they need to pioneer personalised, voice for their own business and then verticalize it for everyone else’s.

Telcos are voice natives. They need to stop searching for the next killer app, because they’ve literally owned it since 1876 and are masters of it.
