HERE are the shows that are going on sale Friday
HERE is the album list for last week.
James Alexander and the Bar-Kays are coming to NOMA Fest on Saturday at Heartland of America Park. The Bar-Kays have played soul, funk, and electro across the decades, scoring hits in the ’60s, ’70s, and ’80s, including one of my favorites, “Soul Finger.” Other classics include “Hit and Run,” “Freakshow on the Dance Floor,” and “Son of Shaft.”
Other performers include MonoNeon, the experimental bassist who was the last bassist Prince hired before his passing. His 2024 album Quilted Stereo features George Clinton and Mavis Staples. I saw him at a festival in Iowa about five years ago, and he was an absolute blast.
Trumpeter Keyon Harrold will also perform. He has played on tracks by 50 Cent, Maxwell, Mac Miller, and many others. He also releases his own solo work, including 2024’s Foreverland on Concord Jazz.
This event is a fundraiser for North Omaha Music and Arts and is FREE to attend.
Long running Omaha singer-songwriter and main-man behind Midwest Dilemma Justin Lamoueux has been doing monthly songwriter nights at Scriptown Brewing for awhile now. He will bring that vibe to Falconwood Park for a one day festival on Saturday with over 25 songwriters sharing their songs and stories for the Tallgrass Prairie Songwriters Festival. They have a plan for rain, so just head out there no matter what.
Saturday night is the final night of Playing With Fire at Slowdown. The FREE festival features French soulful blues rock band Rozedale. That band is playing their first ever show in America on this night. Halo Rider is a duo from Chicago that features guitarist and vocalist Markus James and violinist/vocalist Anne Harris. The lineup is rounded out by Wille and the Bandits from England.
Lombardy obviously do not take themselves all that seriously, but their music seriously rocks. One of their latest songs “Jane Fonda” has a rock era Beastie Boys meets Jack White vibe to it. In other places on their new album Catch A Buzz, Not The Fuzz are gritty bluesy groove rock with “1992 Hooters 500”, and “Sexify” kind of borders on 90’s rap-rock. Yes, they have a ballad-”Goodbye (Get High).” This will be a wild show. They are at The Sydney on Saturday.
Michigan rapper Rio da Yung OG was released from prison in late 2024 and immediately went out on tour. He played the Bourbon Theater last year and this year will bring his tour back to Royal Grove. . He has put out well over a dozen releases in the past five years and will bring some of that to the Lincoln show. I think the show last year sold out.
Blues artist Gabe Stillman is a Gibson Guitar Award winner and International Blues Challenge finalist. He has released a trio of album this decade including …What Happens Next which came out in March. He will be at Sunday Roadhouse at Reverb Lounge on Sunday with Black Cat Rodeo.
Grammy nominated blues rocker Joe Bonamassa is one album away from having thirty number-one blues albums. That is a lot. You can hear some of the songs from those albums at Pinewood Bowl Theater on Sunday. He will be joined by jam band Gov’t Mule.
Other happenings this weekend include a Sunday show at Pageturners with McCarthy Trenching, John Bellows and Sean Pratt. That one is FREE. Richie Love returns to Omaha to close out NOMA Fest at North Omaha Music and Arts. Names Without Numbers does a show at Whiskey Roadhouse. Nice to see that venue branching out. The Bishops perform at Saturday’s at Stinson Park for a FREE show. Nice to see that venue branching out.
