The Coolest Girls are Dating Their Clothes like Potential Partners.

At the end of the day, shopping for clothes isn’t that dissimilar to dating. Arguably yes, clothes don’t have the power to stand you up and may even give you more of a thrill when you find that really special piece. However something I’ve noticed is that the way I dress, the way I shop isn’t far from what I actually look for in a partner. For example; I would describe my style as classic with a twist, so naturally I ended up with a very traditional Englishman who is full of quirks…

Perhaps I’ve gone absolutely crackers in the 38 degree weather but it rings true. Maybe we all need to date our clothes, in order to understand what works for us? I mean how many people find their ideal person after one date? Unless you are in the mere 5% I would argue not many. Just like finding your ideal match, having good style requires the same amount of fieldwork. Trying on various shapes, trends and fabrics to see what works for you. Yes you will probably go back to things or people, that in hindsight didn’t look great on you but that is just the ironic story of life. After some time you will learn what you don’t like and what you love, meaning more cut throat decisions and the bravery to see a trend a know that isn’t for you. So next time you find yourself on NAP or in Bergdorf’s, try to apply the same rules for shopping you would for dating and see where it takes you.

With that being said, I hereby present my loose personal shopping guide to my ideal man and therefore my ideal style, in the form of the best of new in (naturally):

The Investment Piece:

Probably the most important thing in dating AND shopping is longevity, sometimes that means you have to save or wait a little first but it’s always worth it. My case in point being this Row leather jacket, once you find it - life changing.

The Joy Bringer:

For me, someone fun is something I can’t live without. Someone unpredictable with a great sense of humour, who is not afraid to be themselves. These High Sport pants feel like exactly that, especially when paired with a reliable blue Kate sweater.

The Stand Out:

Just like the perfect dress (which is Rosie Assoulin in this case ) the perfect partner should always stand out to you, even if you’re the only person who’s sees it…

The One With Depth (Texture):

Texture or Depth is a vital ingredient in any partnership for me. I would go absolutely mad having surface level conversation 24/7, but I am a scorpio after all. I apply the same logic to my outfits, ruthlessly. My offerings here? A Red Fringe Liberowe jacket, Khaite ruched top and woven The Row shoulder bag.

The Reliable One:

Reliability is a key trait and what is more reliable than denim? Let alone a denim set.

The Comfortable One:

When I look for cashmere I look for the kind of soft thickness that releases the same serotonin as a secure relationship.

The Bold One:

Nothing says a bold move more than Khaite tailoring, which is exactly the kind of energy I look for. Someone who doesn’t need me to tell them what to do or what to plan.

The Hard Worker:

Ambition is an aphrodisiac and nothing screams ambition more than an Alex Mill Tote, a bag that tells you it will do everything and anything it can for you before you’ve even taken it out. A true trooper.

The Interesting One:

I like my clothes the way I like most people, looking like they have a story or two to tell. Nothing screams that more than a vintage jean and an absolutely enticing velvet moss coloured jacket.

The Spontaneous One:

No one likes 110% predictability, that’s why sometimes you have to mix it up and add in a print or ‘wrong trouser’.

The Versatile One:

Enough said. One that can do simple jeans and a cardigan but can also mix in a hint of snake print and beaded moment.

The Sexy One:

Sometimes you need a little drama to feel good, my examples here are the perfect leather jacket and croc heels.

The Frugal When it Matters:

Because if I dated someone who spent as much as me, it would not be a pretty pairing. Sometimes every shopper needs a savvy side to maintain some stability. In this case that sides name is Zara.

Oh and before you go…

A little crazy never hurt anyone and I would consider it on the crazier side to buy something literally upon seeing it. However, these dual suede/snake print Jane flats from Khaite just did it for me. Not only have they already been marked within the fashion cool girl community as the comfiest flats, this new colour way feels perfect for a hint of interest this fall.
