Burros of Burden

This is an illustrative essay — an observation in metaphor for this moment in time — rather than a written one. When I’m exhausted, I find it easier to draw a concept than hunt around for the precise words. The ingredients of life right now are enough to paint a clear picture, complete with phantom adjectives, for our collective depletion: household chores, family admin, finances, groceries, an ominous sound coming from the dishwasher — all the normal stuff — now occupying mental space next to fears of civil unrest, state-sponsored murder, the kidnapping of neighbors, the defiling of national monuments, and the historic destruction of institutions we grew up trusting and admiring. It’s more than a burro can bear, yet we all plod along. The burros I made in 2025 seem rather quaint by comparison.

If you have any advice to impart, in how you are carrying your burro boulders, please do share. I like to consider myself a learning organization, and I’m not doing it well at present.

Our most popular print — now available in a petite desk-top size 5.5 x 8.5”. The ultimate message to impart to a young woman. Limited edition.
