Requesting intermittent LWOP

So I have medical problems, spent some time in the hospital last month, and have weekly to twice weekly medical appointments. I have I think about 4 total days of leave left and three appointment days coming up, not counting going forward. My office (under DoD) has killed telework and I can't take partial days due to my commute requirements (mass transit schedule).

I'm looking at requesting LWOP specifically for my weekly appointments and for when I'm feeling ill. My supervisor is military and knows not a thing about supervising civilians other than just surface stuff.

Will I have to coach him to do something or is it just a matter of selecting LWOP in my time and attendance request and letting him approve it? Can I take just one or two days at a time instead of a block of time? I looked up some previous times that was asked here and I think the answer to that part is yes you can, but I don't know if things have changed.

I'm also going to apply for FMLA, just waiting for my doc to fill out the form, and I know how LWOP and FMLA work together I think. But I don't know much about LWOP on its own other than the general OPM info.

I'm also applying for disability retirement and don't want to compromise my chances of approval. But this rate of leave use is just unsustainable. Any info would be greatly appreciated!
