There’s still no agreed-upon definition of clean beauty.
It’s not coming.
It doesn’t need to.

Every brand and retailer has their own rules and wavy lines.
It’s up to the companies to set their own standards, and it’s up to the consumer to choose between them, often with a great deal of confusion.

The win of the clean beauty conversation is that there is more transparency across the board. Percentages are spelled out, clinicals are touted, sourcing is explained. It’s never been easier to find out if something is fragrance-free, gluten-free, cruelty-free, bad-energy free (kidding on the last one, sort of). Most modern formulas are made without harmful classes of ingredients like endocrine disruptors. There are better alternatives for sulfates. Preservation systems have gotten more sophisticated.
