There are limited activities to do in the heat, but the dark and cool temperatures inside a château convince you to leave your house. You find yourself in front of a white dress, worn a century or so ago by someone who dressed for the heat in a different way than you do now. You wonder what they’d think of the version you’re wearing today. You roam around the winding rooms, taking your time before you’re back on the sidewalk, melting with the rest of us.

The Look

You throw on a lightweight dress that feels like it’s barely there. It’s your go to during the heatwave because you can throw it on and without thinking too much about it. You pair it with a simple earring, a beaded purse and red flip flops — any more effort might send you over the edge in this heat.

While making my way through Château Royal d’Amboise, this dress stopped me mid-step, so much so that I ended up snapping more than one picture of it. I like to think it belonged to the wife or daughter of the family who lived here, something reminiscent of the time.

You’ve been looking forward to the weekend because you finally get to visit Monet’s home and roam around the gardens he painted so beautifully. You slip on your favorite summer dress to mark the occasion.

The Look

The warmer months make you crave color — you’re rarely caught in an all white ensemble. Instead, you opt for a burnt orange dress that’s been your go to all summer long.

I spent most of the day wandering the rows of Monet’s gardens in Giverny, quietly admiring each flower, its colors, shapes, and snapping pictures of my favorites. Among the stillness, I found a bee buzzing around these purple flowers. I patiently waited until I was able to capture it mid-flight.

Once a week, you try to commit to a device free activity and this week’s is playing chess — or at least attempting too.

The Look

You reach for a variation of this outfit often, with the variation coming in the tank silhouette and accessories. This time you go for a muscle tank with long denim shorts. You grab a colorful tote and necklace (use OFELIA15 for 15% off) to add some color.

As we moseyed around the hotel on our last day in Provence, we spotted this chess board tucked off to the side. We wished we’d found it sooner, a game of chess would’ve been a great way to spend the idle afternoons.

It’s your friend’s annual monochromatic summer dinner party. You’re bringing your famous peach crostata and looking forward to laughing the night away around good food and friends. The dinner party is held in her garden, so you’re hoping to stand out among the greenery.

The Look

You go for an off white ensemble with silver accents and a black kitten heel to ground the look. The center piece is a fish purse you can’t stop telling all your friends about.

I still can’t place exactly where I snapped this picture — somewhere in the Loire Valley, possibly on the grounds of Château Royal d’Amboise. A visual reminder that the place doesn’t quite matter as much as the moment in front of you.

You’re settling into the tropical escape you’ve been looking forward to for months. No distractions or decisions to make except what you’re eating for dinner and which book you’re going to dive into next.

The Look

You cycle through your swimsuits, but never stray from your kaftan you slip on. You’re wearing it as a cover up today, but tomorrow you’ll wear it as a dress to dinner. When you’re not lounging on the beach, you’ll slip on your white sandals and grab your beaded purse you’ve been saving for a special occasion.

In the same garden where I spotted the bee, just across the way these flowers caught my eye. The colors were so rich they transported me to the beach, with the feeling of sand in my toes and the sense of ease you feel after a dip in the ocean. I moved as close as I could until all I could see was only the petals and took the shot.

You may have heard that France was hotter than most of the world last week. There were a few days that I honestly didn’t know what to do with myself — there was no escaping the heat. Even though we’ve experienced over 100° F (38° C) in Austin, TX for months, having AC makes a world of difference. My husband and I were taking up to four cold showers a day just to stay cool. We’ve never missed U.S. air conditioning more. Another heat wave may be brewing for Paris, but I’m hoping the forecast is wrong.

Red Sandals, 15 Ways

·

A few years ago, I wouldn’t have bought red sandals. I had this pair on my wishlist for three consecutive summers before finally ordering them. Each time I looked them up, I figured I’d just buy the “safe” black pair — they go with everything, I’d tell myself. Then I remembered how I’d crave a bit of color each summer, when I wore variations of black and white outfits. So I bought the
