The Bay Area’s beloved drag festival Oaklash is returning for its ninth year with a day of nonstop queer art and performances.
Founded in 2018 by Mama Celeste and Beatrix Lahaine, this inclusive celebration knows no binary: Drag kings, queens and every other kind of drag artist is welcome. The organization has evolved into a year-round nonprofit organization dedicated to pushing the boundaries of the art form and creating a safe community for local artists. Even as the event has grown, it’s still maintained its uniquely Bay Area, alternative ethos. At Oaklash, the art can be beautiful, political and just plain stupid (in the good way) all at once.
The Oaklash Block Party in Old Oakland includes seven DJs, 60 performers, and 50 food and art vendors. Stages are hosted by the founders along with Nicki Jizz, Misterrr, Sally Limón and Mojo Carter. This year’s headliners include Aja, a standout on Season 9 of “RuPaul’s Drag Race,” and King Molasses, who won the first season of “King of Drag.”
