Welcome to the official Substack of the Office of New York City Comptroller Mark Levine.

The Comptroller’s Office works to ensure that New York City’s government and economy deliver for New Yorkers across the five boroughs. Through our oversight of the City’s budget, stewardship of our pension funds, review of contracts, audits of agency performance, and enforcement of labor laws, we are laser-focused on the issues that will shape New York City’s future – from housing affordability and job growth to small business vitality, government modernization, and the opportunities and challenges posed by AI.

New York City government is complex, and many of the decisions that shape our economy, neighborhoods, and public services can be difficult to follow in real time. This Substack will take a closer look at those issues – explaining what is happening, why it matters, and what the data tells us.

We’re excited to launch it, and hope you’ll walk away from each post more fulfilled, more inspired, and more informed about local government.
