After 500+ one-on-one conversations with NRIs navigating money across two countries, the same seven mistakes come up again and again. None of them are about being bad with money — they’re about the specific traps that come with living abroad. Here they are, and how to fix each one.

1. Not investing until 35
The Fix: Start now, with whatever amount feels small. Time in the market matters more than the size of the first cheque — the years you wait are the years compounding never gets back.

2. Selling stocks “prematurely”
The Fix: Happens to the best of us. How the hell were you supposed to know! The real fix isn’t beating yourself up about it, it’s a plan — decide your holding horizon before you buy, so a bad week doesn’t make the decision for you.

3. Investing in crypto and losing it
The Fix: Treat speculative bets as a small, capped slice of your portfolio — money you could lose entirely without it changing your life. If losing it would sting for years, it doesn’t belong there.

4. Lending money to a cousin who never paid it back
The Fix: Put a hard limit on what you’re willing to lose before you say yes. Lend only what you could give away without resentment — and treat anything beyond that as a gift you’re declining, not a loan you’re refusing.

5. Not spending on the $8 latte
The Fix: Live your life. Optimizing away every small joy isn’t discipline, it’s just a different kind of stupid. Fix the big line items — rent, subscriptions, investments — and let the coffee stay.

6. Buying real estate abroad, saving for years, and never moving back
The Fix: Only buy property in India once your return date is 2–3 years out, not decades. Buying too early ties up capital in a home you’re not living in and a market you’re not tracking closely enough.

7. Putting money in a Fixed Deposit you’ll need soon
The Fix: Space it out. Ladder your FDs across different maturities instead of locking it all in one, so money is actually available when you need it — without breaking the deposit early and losing the interest.
