About time…

Another missing Oxygen icon, this time KTimer. The idea was simple enough… its a timer, lets make a digital watch. And having grown up in the 80's my brain obviously went directly to those old Casio watches we all had, wanted, lost, or somehow managed to keep alive for 20 years So I started with a very basic shape, mostly trying to get the proportions right, and from there it slowly became more…

Small Icons, Big Problems

People tend to think an icon is a single drawing. One thing I think people miss (or at least some do) is that an icon isn't really one icon at all. The KRecorder microphone above exists as several different versions depending on size. In total that's 16×16, 22×22, 32×32, 48×48, 64×64, 128×128 and 256×256 PNGs, plus a number of SVG versions (6 six more files ). And don't always stop at 128×128 for…

Kommit-ing to a icon

So… another missing icon gets some attention This time it was Kommit. The funny thing about Git related icons is that everybody eventually ends up drawing the same thing. A couple of connected nodes, some branches in a diamond shape.... I started pretty close to the existing Git visual language adjusted to Oxygen, but after a few iterations the icon slowly started drifting towards something that…

I (heart) details.

Take this new Kamoso icon for example. Most people will see a "webcam" with a overly large lense. Some people might notice the reflections. Almost nobody will notice the tiny details inside the lens itself, the subtle changes in materials, the little bits of visual noise that stop things from feeling too artificial, or the writing around the lense repeating KAMOSOLENS 2026. And yet.... Which…

Just fixing a bug!

Or at least that was the plan... The original intent was simply to fix an issue in the Oxygen cursor theme. Some cursor sizes were missing and i thought this would be one of those quick fixes. You know... the kind that takes 10 minutes. Several days later I was redoing most of the animated cursors. One of the things I care a lot about is how much movement contributes to personality. Not just in…

Size Maters

So… more Oxygen icons 🙂 This weekend I been filling some of the more obvious holes in the icon set and recently these 2 landed. The first one is for KeepSecret, the application that is replacing the old KWallet. Security icons are funny. There are only so many ways to draw "keep your stuff safe" [ ]

Some progress on Oxygens icons and more…

So... progress continues on Oxygen Over the last few weeks me and Pravin Kumar have been filling in some of the gaps in the icon set. There are still quite a few missing icons around the place, but slowly Oxygen is becoming a bit more complete again. Its fun revisiting this old project after all these years. Sometimes I find myself looking at old icons wondering what younger me was thinking.…

About the importance of FUN

One of the things I think modern software quietly forgot is fun. Maybe we became to distracterd on the day to day life of affordance and usability,.... we forgot to have a bit of FUN!! So while revamping the old Oxygen icon set into today, and maybe more importantly filling in all the missing icons [ ]

“how does it make you feel”

So... while doing some work on Oxygen I noticed there was no camera-video icon. No Oxygen one.Wille there was already a recently done symbolic one. Which honestly felt a bit odd considering cameras are one of those objects designers historically cant resist over designing heee... (but then again i got a bit 2 distracted about [ ]
