Luke Shaw is 30 years old and out of contract in 10 months. He’s the only senior left-back at Manchester United. He was excellent when fit. The problem was always the "when fit" part. Then there’s his physical decline as well. That was obvious last season and has continued into pre-season. He can still defend and he still passes it well. What he can't do is cover 40 yards, recover, and get back up the pitch 60 times a game. But if United are spending £70m on Carlos Baleba, a premium left-back option is out this transfer window. What's left is a budget that doesn't stretch to Lewis Hall. It buys someone older, or someone younger. Those are two very different bets. So which strategy? In this video I go through how United might approach the problem in the coming week.
