The Anxiety Sisters’ Survival Guide by Abbe Greenberg and Maggie Sarachek is exactly what the title indicates — it’s a survival guide for people who struggle with anxiety.

I was given a complimentary digital copy a few years ago, shortly after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. This was perfect timing because my anxiety was through the roof. It was so helpful, I bought a physical copy of the book to have on hand.

Abbe Greenberg and Maggie Sarachek—creators of the Anxiety Sisters—wrote this survival guide to help others who struggle with anxiety, panic, worry, etc. They drew on their personal experience of what worked, as well as what they learned from the online community.

As mentioned earlier, I started reading this book when my anxiety was super high from being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Reading through it helped me in a few ways: helped me know I wasn’t alone; provided some physiological reasons for how I felt; and, frankly, gave me something to think about other than frickin’ cancer.

Throughout this whole cancer journey, knowing I am not alone has been a huge help. And I think it’s the same for anxiety. It’s something I have dealt with for a long time, and it’s comforting to know others are dealing with the same thing—and still surviving.

The authors did a great job of making it clear that a lot of people deal with this. One of the main ways this was accomplished was through anecdotes from a variety of people plagued by anxiety, panic, worry, etc. It’s hard to open the book and turn to a page that doesn’t have a blurb from someone describing what they have been through. And they are all short quotes, so it’s not like you’re reading long essays from random people.

In addition to helping me feel like I wasn’t alone, I appreciated the explanations of the physiological effects of anxiety. They make clear they are not doctors and that they are not giving medical advice. Honestly, the information is like a nice collection of information you’d find from Dr. Google in one handy book.

And the distraction from cancer was nice. I found myself getting wrapped up in reading the book and thinking about the information and stories being shared. That alone helped me calm down at times.

On top of all this, they provide methods to help with anxiety, from meditation to medication. So if you or someone you know struggles with anxiety, check out The Anxiety Sisters’ Survival Guide by Abbe Greenberg and Maggie Sarache.
