It’s really February of 2024, time flew so fast I didn’t even put out a January newsletter (my bad!). Here’s what’s entered my Dasein in the past couple of months.
Coconut Cult (the best probiotic yogurt) - (no financial affiliation)
I came across Coconut Cult back in 2019, and started stocking their yogurt then. It made a huge impact in my client population in terms of gut health and mental health, as the two systems have a significant link. For whatever reason, the Coconut Cult wholesaling department went crazy and we couldn’t order it for awhile, and then I just forgot about it. BUT, recently I was coming across more clients with gastrointestinal issues and was prescribing oral probiotics and remembered that there’s a better way! Long story short, we have Coconut Cult back in the clinic and the good news for all of you readers out there is that it’s also available at Whole Foods and Sprouts! Each serving of two tablespoons has 50 billion live, colony-forming units across 16 different probiotic strains.
2. Calisthenics – Inspiration from Berg Movement (no financial affiliation).
Coming from weight training and a football-specific exercise background, it never occurred to me that ownership over my musculoskeletal system would be stymied by prematurely loading my spine and peripheral joints with weight and movements that are not actually functional. Having a brush with chronic back pain after a debilitating injury in my late teens first led me down the road to the importance of core strength, which actually has nothing to do with abs or crunches and everything to do with greater focus on intra-abdominal pressure throughout movements, along with conscious diaphragmatic breathing. While it would still be a few years before I had the realization that how much weight I could lift didn’t mean a thing if I didn’t have ownership over my joints and their normal ranges of motion, that shift in mindset prepared me to be able to transition into an adult gymnastics/calisthenics program down the road from where I lived.
Fast forward, after life and its complexities encroached on my time, I began again to focus primarily on power and olympic lifting, along with ARX workouts – which were great for certain goals but ultimately felt inauthentic to my being, especially after watching the Absinthe Cirque de Soleil show! Well, recently I stumbled upon an Instagram page (@sondre_berg) that inspired me to revisit calisthenics and it has been nothing short of incredible. I’ll be posting weekly (hopefully) progress videos on my Instagram (@calebgreerFNP) of my journey to mastering the planche, lever, handstand and other dope movements!
3. Naboso – Further integration of “self” (no financial affiliation).
As a corollary to number two, I was turned on to Naboso via social media. Having my roots in clinical neuroscience and functional neurology, I knew of the potential for their products to take my proprioceptive awareness to the next level. Given the connection between the fascia of the feet through the posterior chain (superficial back line) up to the skull, the more information the nervous system can propagate, the better the functional output.
Yet, improving the accuracy of incoming signals is paramount to avoid compensation patterns that would otherwise derail optimal mobility and tissue integrity. I use the textured toe socks with the toe splays to provide better feedback and foot alignment while I train. They are particularly helpful for unilateral lunge patterns and pistol squats! The socks provide a constant reminder to focus on the feet and consciously utilize the toes to grip and create tension through the floor
That’s all for now! Hope this was informative and helpful - I appreciate you taking the time to read!
