No, vignerons aren’t the only ones liable to feel they’re barely keeping up with the season.
This month I stacked my schedule with Georgia travel, restaurant work, winemaking, and, of course, writing - but the fates had other plans. My toddler son got hospitalized for three days with a nasty stomach virus, which my wife and I caught in due course (in a less life-threatening but nonetheless highly inconvenient form), with the result that I got almost nothing done for several weeks. I write this now from Neive, in the Langhe, where this morning I finally got around to bottling a barrel of unsulfited carbonic-macerated nebbiolo I produced in collaboration with organic vigneron friends here. Still weighing on my mind, amid a brutal European heatwave, are three small steel tanks of wine sitting in perilous conditions awaiting bottling in the Languedoc.
Nevertheless, the season advances. It’s time for another NATURAL WINE SALON CALENDAR! The list below covers end May through August 2026. Much information is still to-be-confirmed; please check back on the Substack for updates. (Organizers: if I’ve overlooked your event, please get in touch!)
Lest readers fear I have totally abandoned my duties of faithfully translating the obscure sentiments of inspiring French natural winemakers, I have included, for subscribers, interviews with two Alsace vignerons whose work pretty much never leaves my mind these days:
An INTERVIEW with HUSSEREN-LES-CHATEAUX legend BRUNO SCHUELLER, probably the most IMAGINATIVE, FREE-THINKING vigneron alive today, whose influence REVERBERATES throughout several generations of RADICAL NATURAL WINEMAKERS. Read here.
An INTERVIEW and VINEYARD TOUR with sui generis ROSHEIM vigneron JEAN-MARC DREYER, whose organic permaculture viticulture is notable for the ENCOURAGEMENT OF TREES within vineyards. Read here.
Initially I intended these two pieces to comprise part of an ALSATIAN INSPIRATION PART II issue. But the realities of maintaining this Substack in parallel with a restaurant and a growing family are obliging me to get my articles out when I can, however I can, rather than saving them all up for big themed issues. Rest assured that I will, sooner or later, tie up the loose threads of much of this Alsace material in a larger piece of commentary.
Anyway, new and noteworthy salons these this season include: what is billed as the 25th (!) and final edition of Antonin Iommi-Amunategui’s long-running SOUS LES PAVES, LA VIGNE salon in Paris on June 6th-8th, which will unite a sixty-strong cast of natural vignerons, including a particularly strong Alsace line-up; NACH-BARN WINE FEST, a new salon organized by Czech natural wine impresario Jan Culik to be held on August 1st in the Moravian border town of Znojmo, with the aim of fostering cross-cultural exchange between natural winemakers in Moravia and nearby Austria; and, of course, the never-uneventful climax of summertime in Burgundy, Vin Noé’s HAUT LES MAINS salon on July 26th.
In the meantime, here’s wishing everyone a healthy and productive late springtime! Tomorrow I’m skipping breakfast and racing back to Burgundy via Savoie. It never ends.
