The Tool and the Tedium

Lately, I have been thinking a lot about my relationship with mathematics. I blame it on a certain friend of mine who’s rather passionate about math, and as a byproduct of a somewhat recent discussion, I’ve been thinking about how math—something that’s more or less an inescapable pillar of my life— starts feeling… cold. Come to think of it, my profession as a sailmaker is fundamentally an exercise in applied geometry and physics—calculating draft, camber, broadseams, and tension across non-Euclidean surfaces—and my hobby as a software “engineer” is built entirely on discrete mathematics and logic. Sure I don’t quite dabble in the math-heavy part of software, but still. It’s ultimately math.

The period of contemplation has lead me to the realization that there is a specific kind of exhaustion, one you might be familiar with, that comes from looking at a problem you know you can solve, knowing exactly the mathematical concepts required to solve it, and feeling absolutely zero desire to do the work. Math pays my bills. Math powers my free time. And yet, if I look at in the naked light of total honesty, I can no longer find it fun at face value. The passion is gone, and what remains is a quiet, frustrating friction.

The Loss of the Challenge

You might be noticing a pattern in my more “personal” posts as of late. I’ve lost something, but I can’t quite decide on what. In the same spirit of those posts where I feel like this is yet another instance of loss. There was a time for me when a complex equation was a puzzle to be unraveled. The challenge was intrinsic. I wrestled with the numbers, balancing the constraints, and the eventual “click” of the solution was the reward. Now I am under the—perhaps delusional—impression that I have done all there is to do. There is simply no more worth discovering that will genuinely return my investment in some shape or form.

A challenge is only engaging when the friction feels productive. Recently, math has stopped feeling challenging in the right way. Instead of an intellectual playground, it has become a logistical roadblock. When I am trying to design a sail, the complex geometric calculations required to translate a 3D flying shape into 2D flat panels and carefully arranging them in the nesting program don’t feel like a discovery anymore; they feel like a toll booth I have to pass through to get to the actual craftsmanship. The same applies to software. Whether I’m structuring complex logic in Rust or mapping out a heavily interconnected system architecture, the underlying mathematical proofs and algorithmic complexities just feel tedious. I find myself wanting to skip the derivation and just get to the implementation.

This loss of passion ultimately boils down to a shift in how I value my mental energy. I can’t help but compare the time spent grinding through mathematical concepts to what else I could be doing with that exact same time.

The feedback loop of pure mathematics is painfully slow and deeply internal. The reward is abstract. Contrast this with the immediate, visceral satisfaction of seeing a system work. There is an undeniable rush in watching a beautifully declarative environment spring to life flawlessly, or plugging data streams into Grafana and watching abstract numbers instantly transform into a rich, visual narrative on a dashboard. When I weigh the abstract satisfaction of solving a math problem against the tangible, immediate joy of building a visible, functioning system, the math loses every time. I would rather build the homelab, write the code, or construct the sail. The end product is what I care about; the math is just the stubborn, unyielding material I have to carve through to get there.

Closing Thoughts

I think in the end I have come to accept the scaffolding. It is a strange realization for someone surrounded by numbers to admit they no longer enjoy them. But maybe that transition is a natural part of mastering a craft.

When you first learn a tool, you are fascinated by the tool itself. You study the hammer, you balance it, you learn how the weight shifts. But eventually, you stop looking at the hammer and you just look at the nail. Consequently, math has transitioned from being the subject of my fascination to being the silent scaffolding of my work. I don’t have to love it anymore. I don’t have to find it intrinsically rewarding to recognize its absolute necessity. It is the language I use to command machines to route traffic, and it is the physical law I use to make canvas catch the wind.

It is no longer the destination. It is just the road. And accepting that has made the journey a lot less frustrating.
