In addition to the books published by Northern Light Media over the past two decades, there’s information about the Alaskan History Magazine, published bimonthly, with issues going back to 2019.
There are two new books this spring, The Iditarod Trail: From Resurrection Bay to Norton Sound, by Helen Hegener, published in March; and Icy Hell: Experiences of a news-reel cameraman in the Aleutian Islands, Eastern Siberia and the Arctic fringes of Alaska, by Will E. Hudson, A.S.C., published June 1 but available now. Hudson’s book is a reprinting of a rare and hard-to-find title published in 1937, about an adventure which happened in 1913 when the schooner Polar Bear became entrapped in the ice near Barrow and Hudson and three others set out for Fort Yukon, crossing the Brooks Range on foot. It’s a terrific adventure, well told by Hudson, who was a staff photographer for The Seattle Post-Intelligencer and documented the journey with his many photographs.
The current issue of Alaskan History Magazine features a broad overview of many of the first missionaries to Alaska, who set in place parameters which still affect all Alaskans.
Other articles in this issue include The Espicopal Church in Iditarod by the Rev. Hudson Stuck, the first issue of The Alaska Railroad Record, pages from an early tourist book on Skagway, a look at Anchorage’s historic Federal Building, and an article from 1914 by Belmore Browne on The Dogs of the North.
