GOLSPIE Sutherland look like being without at least nine first team players when they play in the Scottish Cup Second Preliminary Round at Penicuik Athletic tomorrow.
Manager Keegan Campbell says some of their players will not be part of their squad due to their commitments with Golspie Stafford who are playing in the Highland Amateur Cup final against Whalsay on Saturday, August 29.
Players would need to be released from Golspie Stafford to play for Golspie Sutherland in the Scottish Cup clash on Saturday. However, if that happened they would not be available for selection for Stafford in the Highland Amateur Cup final next weekend.
Campbell, who is also the manager of Golspie Stafford, says due to the importance of the Highland Amateur Cup next weekend, will have to field a weakened team for Golspie Sutherland tomorrow.
He said: “We are struggling as players who are signed with Golspie Stafford will not be able to play for Golspie Sutherland.
“The competition rules state once players have joined a semi professional club, they are not able to go back to playing amateur football that season.
“We will be missing around nine or 10 players for Golspie Sutherland for the Scottish Cup game. But we will still have a lot of talent available to take down to Penicuik.”
Golspie have recorded victories in the Scottish Cup in recent years, which included defeating Hawick Royal Albert 2-1 back in 2023. That year, they took Highland League team Forres Mechanics to a penalty shoot-out after their match finished 1-1 after extra time, but they lost 8-7 in the shoot-out.
Golspie had beaten Hawick Royal Albert three times in the Scottish Cup since 2012, when they beat them 4-2 and then beat them 2-0 in 2021.
Campbell says Golspie Sutherland do enjoy playing in the Scottish Cup and are looking to progress in the tournament.
“It is the biggest competition that Golspie Sutherland play in.
“We have done a bit of research about Penicuik but not done too much about it really.
“It would be a good celebration if we won.”
