This winter I have been wrestling with enormous amounts of self doubt and have been getting super uptight about everything which is not exactly conducive to the type of art I like to make or the particular mental state I enjoy spending time in. I’ve reasoned that this doubt is most likely due to the fact that it is cold and therefore I can not do my #1 favorite activity which is drawing pictures in the park. And when you are situationally barred from a thing that provides an immense amount of pleasure and existential relief of sorts, the pressure starts to compound in strange other ways. If I was a baker I suspect I would be making copious amounts of muffins right now but I am not a baker because I’m pretty sure I have some sort of generational trauma related to cleaning the kitchen (that or I just can’t stand it). This post is already to long for email and I didn’t mean to write such a robust description (can you describe your description?) but here we are so I will continue – which, is a great segue into this project called Book of Mistakes which was created as a sort of antidote or possibly a salve to winter’s grey and parkless clutches. For those of you who want to let me know I am still allowed to go to the park in the winter, you must know that it is extremely unpleasant to draw with cold fingers – they get all hard and stiff and all the illustrations begin to take on a similar type of rigidity. Sooooooo no thank you on that front. Book of Mistakes is a project I invented to overcome the compounding doubt. I created a book and made a new mistake on each page. This included burning, spilling, smashing, dropping and running over with a car (see: the last spread). Then I used this pre ruined book as my sketchbook. I assumed there would be no possible way I could mess this up, however, this is actually the second iteration of the project. I didn’t find the first one narratively compelling. This one, finally, I absolutely love. Please enjoy my Book of Mistakes!
If you liked this project, try it yourself. And obviously show me what you make.
Yours,
Tala
