The babies of great crested grebes are striped black and white, and like to ride on their parents’ backs (mom and dad raise them jointly), peeking out from their hiding places underneath the feathers. (Altaussee, Styria, July 2026)

There are hundreds of translations of the Tao Te Ching. My favorite one is by Alexander Ular, in German, from 1903, which is still known and considered relevant (and also controversial) in German-speaking countries, but was never translated into English. I have long wanted to do it, and now I did — here it is: https://dunyazad-library.net/authors/alexander-ular.htm I do not speak a word of Chinese…

There’s a minor update to my Hypatia RPN calculator for Windows, the new version is 5.2. I’m biased, of course, but it’s a really great tool for anything from the most simple arithmetic calculations to complex iterations or Monte Carlo experiments, and it’s free and open source. https://hypatia-rpn.net
We have the good fortune to live among squirrels. (They have the good fortune that we feed them.) This is one of them, seen from our balcony. (Vienna, April 2026)

Visiting three nature reserves around Vienna in the last two weeks (one of them officially called “bird paradise”) in the hope of seeing some birds, this was the closest thing to a bird that I got in front of my camera. Galloway cattle, Eckartsau (Lower Austria), March 2026. (They are employed there for grassland maintenance. Sadly, the good job they do will not save them from being…

I’m working on an English translation of Alexander Ular’s nearly untranslatable but fascinating German translation of the Tao Te Ching from 1903, and, while I’m at it, also of his French translation from 1900. Just in case (not likely, I know) that someone here sees this who might for some reason find it interesting, I’d be happy to hear from them.
Woodpecker? Wallpecker? Housepecker? Hammering noises drew me out onto the balcony, and precariously bending over the rail I spied this bird pecking away at the house, over at the corner, high up near the roof gutter. (Vienna, January 2026)

Half a year after the last update, I’ve uploaded version 5.1 of my Hypatia RPN calculator app for Windows, https://hypatia-rpn.net It brings a minor new feature that may mostly be useful for those who want to create their own 3-argument user-defined operators — not sure how many (if any) will ever need it, but when (usually out of nowhere) an idea for how to improve Hypatia comes to me, I…
