The other day, one of my friends told me he was soccer-ed out from the World Cup.

After these two stories, my World Cup has ended:

Normally, I am ethically opposed to the third-place game.
I guess it’s a sign of growth, right?

I tried writing an intro where I likened this summer’s growing discontent with soccer’s adoption of technology — beginning with the constant, thankless efforts of a select few (like the early subscribers to this newsletter), eventually co-opted by the masses (American Outlaws, the Croatian government, etc.) — to how upstart political movements actually affect change on a large scale, but my brain…

Are you and your loved ones also confused by our English-language American broadcasters continually using the phrase “unplayable” to describe a soccer player who is simply playing soccer at a really high level and not one who is unable to or not good enough to play?

We’re just over a week into the World Cup and rather beginning this newsletter by attempting to make some kind of pithy comment that tries to sum up everything that’s happened, I wrote you an entire column about it.
