A police officer shot a suspect during a suspicious situation outside a police station in Sittard early Friday morning. The man was injured in his leg, the police said in a statement.
The shooting occurred around 1:00 a.m. on Stationsplein, after the police received a report of a "suspicious situation" outside the police station. “Subsequently, a situation arose in which a police officer fired a shot,” the police said.
Paramedics treated the man’s injuries at the scene before the police arrested him and transported him to the hospital. The man in question is a 34-year-old from Nijmegen.
No one else was injured, the police said. A spokesperson could not elaborate to NOS exactly what the suspicious situation entailed.
The Rijksrecherche, the department that handles internal investigations at government services like the police, will investigate the shooting. This is standard procedure whenever a police officer fires their weapon.
