At my first department meeting, my department head and I sat at the rectangular wooden table in the middle of her classroom. It was the only surface not covered with a monitor and keyboard. Class rosters and schedules were just released. Students would return to campus in a week.
On a typical day, I get to the office around 6:40 am. The lights are off and the office is quiet. The president is usually there. He’s on a call with someone in the Chicago office. I settle in, open my task manager, and get started with the day’s work.
I was caught off guard making this year’s list. I read 30 books this year. It felt like I barely opened a book after my daughter’s birth in September. I saw trends in my reading this year, more so than in past years. I dove into topics around Japan, parenting, sci-fi and behavioral economics throughout 2023.

As part of my annual review, I go over my purchases from the past year. I like to see what I spent my money on and if it brought me joy. I use this exercise as a guide for purchases in the coming year. It might seem obvious but I want to spend more money on the things that bring me joy and less on the things that do not.
