The first question I ask has nothing to do with paint, furniture, or color.

Every client comes in with an idea of where we’re supposed to start. A paint color they’ve been circling for months. A sofa they found and can’t stop thinking about. A Pinterest board they’re a little embarrassed to show me.

I don’t start there. Before any of that, I ask one question about the room itself: what in here do you actually think is fixed?

Most people have never asked it. Walls, doors, the layout, all of it gets treated like weather, something to plan around rather than something you’re allowed to have an opinion about. A door goes unquestioned because it’s a door. A wall stays because it’s already there. People spend money decorating around problems that were never actually permanent to begin with.

That’s the whole philosophy behind it. Fixed doesn’t mean permanent. Fixed means nobody has questioned it yet. A wall you assumed was structural might not be. A door that has to be there because it’s always been there might be the actual reason the room doesn’t work.

Paint and furniture are reversible decisions. You can always repaint, always swap a sofa. The layout is the one decision that quietly outlasts every other choice made after it, and it’s the one almost nobody questions.

A client’s primary bathroom is the clearest example I have of this. Before and after below, one door that everyone assumed had to stay became something the room actually needed instead.
