I started Rebel Recipes in 2015. Instagram was completely different then - no algorithm, no reels, no carefully optimised content strategy. Just images. Beautiful, slightly chaotic images of food that people actually cared about.

And something magical happened in that window. Home cooks from all over the world - genuinely passionate about plant-based food, all starting from scratch at roughly the same time - just found each other. We congregated on Instagram the way people used to congregate in village squares, except we were in completely different countries and none of us really knew what we were doing. The photos were honestly quite bad. But the passion was real, and the community that formed around it was something I’ve never quite seen replicated since.

Bettina’s Kitchen. Shisodelicious. Alpha Foodie. Food by Maria. So many people who have gone on to do genuinely brilliant things. We all just showed up, supported each other, got better together. It felt like an incredibly tiny, warm, slightly mad little world. I loved it.

Then my peers started getting cookbook deals.
