The painting is based on a scene from the 1954 film Black Widow. Directed by Nunnally Johnson. The woman in the painting here is Peggy Ann Garner as Nancy Ordway.

“The secret of love is greater than the secret of death”

The line “The mystery of love is greater than the mystery of death.” is by Oscar Wilde, in Salomé — Written originally in French in 1892.

Wilde’s one-act tragedy Salomé was translated into English by Lord Alfred Douglas — It inspired some of Aubrey Beardsley’s finest illustrations, and served as the text for Strauss’ renowned opera of the same name.

The music playing during this scene in the film is from Dance of the Seven Veils from Salomé by Richard Strauss…

Salome, Op. 54, is an opera in one act by Richard Strauss. The libretto is Hedwig Lachmann’s German translation of the 1893 French play Salomé by Oscar Wilde, edited by the composer.
